The Biotech Stradivarius - The 50 Best Inventions of 2009 - TIME

"On Sept. 1, an audience of experts took part in a blind test of five violins. One of the violins was a $2 million Stradivarius, made in 1711 by the greatest stringed-instrument maker of all time. Another was a modern violin made of wood that had been specially treated by Professor Francis Schwarze of the Swiss Federal Laboratory for Materials Testing and Research. Schwarze used two fungi to alter Norwegian spruce and sycamore to closely resemble the wood Stradivarius used, then commissioned a violin maker to build an instrument with them. The listeners were asked to identify the Strad, and 113 picked Schwarze's violin. The actual Stradivarius got only 39 votes.

One theory has it that Stradivarius' violins sound better because the craftsman lived in a brief climatic period that produced particularly high-quality wood"

Fresh Track: Passion Pit - "Little Secrets" (via Last.fm)

Apparently it's Fresh Track Tuesday.

It's awesome to see these guys absolutely blowing up. I had the good fortune of catching them the night before they launched their US tour early this year. I got their so early, I was able to stand in the front row at Great Scot's. Jamie and I were practically on stage. What a great memory...can't wait to see them again in January. Hopefully they're just as raw and powerful as they were the first time.

If anyone knows my musical taste, they'll know I like this.  Super unique sound and very dramatic - it's like two or three songs mashed up into one.

Rob Machado's "The Drifter" premiers this Friday at Patagonia in Cardiff, CA

Pretty hip little trailer, although I'm not sure if it's going to be awesome, a little too faux-existential, or simply a Hurley ad.  Either way, I've always dug Rob's laid back surfing style so I'm sure it'll be worth a watch at some point.

(For all of your scoring at home, it's been about 3 years since I've dipped my board in the water.  Embarrassing and really not cool.  My solution is donating it to the Scott's house down in Tortola - hopefully she'll get some more use down there.  God knows she's too pretty to leave in a basement.)

From "The Wednesday Chef": Julia Moskin's Caramelized Corn with Fresh Mint

Corn is way underrated. Can't wait to try this soon.
